Recipient Criteria
Bad things happen to good people, and we’re here to help.
We provide a varied scope of assistance directly to individuals and families in our community who have been faced with a recent, unexpected hardship.
There is no request too big or small; if we are able to help, we will.
We want to make this process as easy as possible for our recipients, but there are a few requirements our recipients need to meet.
River Ellis Foundation Criteria
They must live in Hampton Roads and have encountered an unexpected hardship within the past 60 days.
They have not received funds from The River Ellis Foundation during the past calendar year.
They must be nominated by someone who is in the network of supporters of the River Ellis Foundation. For example: A board member, an advisory committee member, a community referral partner, or someone who is affiliated with a person in one of these roles. If you do not know someone in one of these roles but wish to nominate someone, please contact us directly. Individuals may NOT nominate themselves as a recipient.
The recipient must agree to ‘give a sunrise’ through a future act of kindness to someone else in the community.
If the recipient is approved, they must submit the bills of the requested covered expenses to the foundation so that we can pay them directly. In situations where this is not possible, we will work with the recipient directly to identify the best method for covering the requested expenses.
Sharing the impact of The River Ellis Foundation is crucial for maintaining the financial support that we need from our donors. Our recipients must sign a media release form so that their story may be shared. If they wish to remain anonymous, we will keep their names and all identifying information confidential.
